What is the Most Popular Sport for Kids?

When deciding to start your child in sports, many parents wonder what is the most popular sports for kids. While it used to baseball or basketball, parents around the country starting their children in soccer more often than any other sport. Many wonder why we see this when soccer is certainly not the most popular spectator sport. Further, is this a positive trend?

The recent trend toward soccer is definitely a positive! Soccer is an excellent sport for children for 3 reasons:

  1. Lifetime Fitness First and foremost, soccer players run. Additionally, many sports like football and baseball bring enjoyment during your teen years. But soccer is the most popular recreational sport for adults. With a ball and a few friends you can literally play soccer until you are 100. Indoor Soccer Leagues around the country are available for all ages and skill levels.
  2. Team Skills Soccer teaches team skills by having 22 (11 per side) involved participants on the field the entire game. Each individual has a role, but the game is fluid enough that you and your team need to work as one unit to bring the ball up the field and defend your goal. Communication is an important part of this game.
  3. Fun Kicking something ranges from fun to funny. And if kicking is not enough, there are throw ins, drop balls, free kicks and whistles. Don't forget the oranges at half-time too.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world for a reason. Do not hesitiate introduce soccer to your child!
